Beach Tai Chi

A Day on the Beach

A landmark event.

Adrin gives smartphone helpIt was a day on the beach to remember. We were pleased to be part of a landmark community event along with Swansea Council and Swansea Ageing Well. The whole day was a huge success.

Balanced Lives Tai Chi on the beach with Mike Hart proved to be particularly popular. Our advice centre was also very busy with Operations Manager, Myles Lewis providing information on Action For Elders exercise and wellbeing community programmes. Our digital expert Adrian Scott provided technical advice: on everything from phones and laptops, to how to access online help with energy bill queries. This support is absolutely vital as people struggle to cope during the cost of living crisis.

This was the first of its kind in Swansea and everyone left with a smile on their face.

The event actually started with a litter pick the day before, to put across an important message of conservation and the need to look after our wonderful beaches.

There were a wide range of stalls offering help and advice; including Swansea Ageing Well and the Chinese in Wales Association. The latter put on a dazzling display of dance and there was reggae music throughout the day from Trim Bling, plus sax playing at lunchtime from the appropriately named, Steve Sax.

Grandparents on childcare duties over the summer brought their grandchildren along, which ensured it was a cross generational event. The children joined in with our Tai Chi on the beach sessions as Mike Hart put everyone through their paces for a fun and active session, that was strangely cooling.

Swansea Council kept everyone in high spirits by providing floral necklaces. This was a celebration of later life, culturally varied, diverse and guaranteed to challenge all aged related stereotypes.

A massive thank you to Swansea Council and Swansea Ageing Well for making us part of their wonderful community initiative on Swansea Beach. Events like these are vital for the older community.
