Digital Book Club – First Edition
Our first official event a huge success.
After the initial success of our ‘Pilot’, Action For Elders first proper ‘DBC’ – Digital Book Club took place live on Zoom.
Our online book club is a bit different than the norm. Most book clubs take a look at one particular book – our event went one better – or five better – with no less than five books being discussed! It was a fun-filled 45 minutes.
The participants chose a wide variety of titles, but all managed to come up with vivid and entertaining descriptions of the books that they had enjoyed and how they meant something to them.
Here is the list of Books discussed:

Betty Sutherland (Action For Elders Mobility Lead):
Becoming Bulletproof (Simon & Schuster USA) – by Evy Poumpouras
Former Secret Service agent Evy shares lessons learned from protecting presidents and dealing with danger to help you prepare for stressful situations.

Ann (Participant)
When All is Said (Hodder & Stoughton) – by Anne Griffin
One man’s twilight-hour toasts to five people who defined his life, Griffin weaves a powerful and tender depiction of ordinary existence in all its flawed, quiet glory.

Suzanne (Participant)
The Accidental Tourist (Vintage) – by Anne Tyler
A fascinating and wildly entertaining story of one man, coping with the chaos of everyday life, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Jill (Participant)
The Penguin Lessons (Penguin) – by Tom Michell
A memoir of a young teacher set against the turbulent years of Argentina, following the collapse of the corrupt Perónist regime. It’s also the story of Juan Salvador the penguin, rescued by Tom from an oil slick in Uruguay.

Larraine (Participant)
Black Diamonds (Penguin) – by Catherine Bailey
The title refers to coal: a tale of family feuds, forbidden love, civil unrest and downfall of a mining dynasty. An extraordinary story of the shifts in English society over a 50-year period.
