Help for the local community

Action For Elders receives funding from the National Lottery to tackle the impact of Coronavirus

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to far-reaching consequences for older people in local communities. Action For Elders is able to continue supporting the community during the Coronavirus crisis thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund.

Action for Elders has received a grant top-up from the National Lottery Community Fund which means we can actively make life better under lockdown for those in later life. This is a very uncertain time for many and during the long road back to normality it is important to be able to serve the most vulnerable members of our society.

Support continues even during lockdown

Our Balanced Lives projects in the Vale of Glamorgan are helping their community during this challenging time thanks to National Lottery players. There has been a lack of opportunity for older people and indeed, a reluctance to engage in technology prior to this pandemic. Thanks to the Lottery grant, we have been able to help older people stay connected with their friends and family members.

One of our Action For Elders volunteers supports a participant to install ‘WhatsApp’ so that she can keep in touch with the other members of our Balanced Lives Group.

Balanced Lives is now online

Many older people have been hugely affected by COVID-19 due to lockdown and been unable to access vital support services such as social groups and healthy exercise classes. We have taken our Balanced Lives programmes online so that we can offer such services.

Vicki Evans, Director of Operations says:

“We have in a very short time implemented services focused on the challenges of COVID-19. Our Balanced Lives at Home programme will combine online health and wellbeing classes with a technology loan scheme to ensure older people in the Vale of Glamorgan can continue to exercise, get health information and keep in touch with their friends during this period of self-isolation and beyond.”
