Josef Herman Heritage Trail
Celebrating an artist and refugee.
We take a look at the fascinating life and work of Jewish artist and refugee Josef Herman OBE RA.
Broadening Our Scope
We are broadening the scope of our Getting Back Out There campaign with a special arts based event, in partnership with the Josef Herman Foundation. Join us for a Guided Walking Tour to celebrate the life of the Polish Jewish refugee artist who fled the Warsaw ghettos, finding a safe home in Ystradgynlais, South Wales.
Josef Herman OBE was a highly regarded Polish-British painter born in 1911. The Heritage Trail showcases the Ystradgynlais mining community during the 1940s and 1950s; his bold, distinctive work documenting the lives of miners, farmers and metal workers.
L.S. Lowry, The Tate and Ystradgynlais
His first London exhibition took place in 1943 with L S Lowry and he has been regularly exhibited at the Tate. Josef continued to work until his death at the age of 89. His artwork evokes memories of post war years for an older generation and informs a younger post-industrial generation of the rich heritage of Ystradgynlais village.
The Heritage Trail
The Heritage trail programme includes an illustrated brochure with key points and locations and an App with GPS locations, allowing people to either visit in person to follow the trail, or take a virtual walk around Ystradgynlais from anywhere in the world.
